Exciting news for Mary S. Moore, owner and founder of The Cook’s Warehouse, who was named president of Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) at The Ritz-Carlton, Atlanta, this past weekend.

Les Dames d’Escoffier International is an invitational organization of women leaders in food, beverage and hospitality whose mission is education, advocacy and philanthropy. To do this, members in its chapters provide leadership, educational opportunities and host philanthropic events within their communities.

The local Atlanta Chapter of Les Dames helps Georgia Organics, Wholesome Wave, the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market and Oakhurst Community Garden.

In 2011, the Atlanta Chapter gave scholarships of $30,500 to 10 women, ages 18 to 50, at seven different institutions. The 28 international chapters have granted more than $4 million in culinary scholarships since LDEI was founded in 1973 in New York.

The Cook’s Warehouse is a fantastic gourmet cookware store and cooking school boasting four stores in the Midtown, Decatur and Brookhaven areas in the city and the East Cobb County area of the suburbs. Sliced filet at Fleming's Steakhouse & Wine Bar

Whenever I go out with my girlfriends, we order a few small plates to share. This isn’t anything revolutionary. At the opening of the now-defunct Craft | Atlanta, Top Chef‘s Tom Colicchio told a group of journalists that’s what he preferred, too. Dunwoody’s Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar (4501 Olde Perimeter Way, Atlanta, GA 30346, 770.698.8112) gets in on the action with its introduction of seven small plates to its menu. These lighter, healthier dishes represent a whole new way to dine at Fleming’s—to be enjoyed anytime with a glass of wine, shared with friends, or as a starting course to a meal. Fleming’s small plates showcase a Mediterranean style of dining and dishes like the pictured sliced filet mignon with shiitake risotto, which blends Asian influences with European flavors. Time to grab a girlfriend—or Tom—and head to Dunwoody!

Southern Art opens in Atlanta’s InterContinental Hotel today. The urban eatery combines Southern comfort with upscale, modern elements, such as a handsomely appointed bourbon bar, large painted canvases hanging from the ceiling and, of course, a famous chef leading the charge. Chef Art Smith is at the helm; you might know him as Oprah’s chef, as the executive chef and co-owner of Table fifty-two and Art and Soul restaurants, as a contestant on Top Chef Masters or as a guest judge on Top Chef. Or perhaps as the author of his cookbook, Back to the Family. He’s also founder of Common Threads, a non-profit organization that teaches children about diversity and tolerance through the world’s great cultures. I could go on about his awards, too, but suffice it to say he’s definitely a rising rock star in the culinary world.

Chef Art Smith

A native of Jasper, Fla. (just below Valdosta, so we’ll count that as the South), Chef Smith brings his delicious Southern roots to a boil in his rich menu packed with family favorites, such as his mother Addie Mae’s chicken and dumpling soup, a hearty meal with tender chunks of chicken and silky soft pappardelle noodles; buttermilk fried chicken from Springer Mountain paired with creamed butter ball potatoes, Brussels sprout leaves and cracked pepper gravy; deviled eggs; angel biscuits; North Carolina catfish; sweet potato casserole; and, of course, the full lineup of rich desserts like red velvet cake, mockingbird cake, buttermilk chocolate cake and banana pudding.

Smith isn’t the only star at this tasty lineup. If you’ve ever been to Charleston (and what serious foodie hasn’t?), you’ve certainly dined at High Cotton and tasted the splendid dishes of Chef Anthony Gray. At Southern Art, Executive Chef Gray oversees every detail, from the careful, slow stirring of the black rice for the Carolina black rice risotto to the selection of all the exquisite hams from all over the South. Chef Gray is practically giddy over the artisan ham bar. He can identify each and every shaving of delicate pink meat and rattle off how it was prepared and the goings-on of the farm from which it came. I’m not even a ham eater, but his descriptions made it irresistible. What I ate melted in my mouth like smooth, lightly salted butter. I added another piece to my biscuit, and it was pure Southern heaven. Y’all better go.
